I have been living in Canada
since 1972, but over the years I have generally managed to return to NC at
least once a year. My parents have both passed away now, so I don't have
much connection with Chapel Hill except Nancy Aycock and Dan Leigh. Brother
Jim, however, lives and works in the Raleigh area, and my oldest daughter
Anna is living in Asheville, so through them I still have an NC connection.
As a matter of fact, Anna is getting married on May 19,
and we will all be in the mountains for the wedding at the Nantahala Outdoor
Centre. She is a professional whitewater kayaker who travels North America
instructing women, producing videos and writing columns on kayaking. Her
website is www.watergirlsatplay.com if you are surfing the net.
I have three other daughters still in Canada. Caroline
is the mother of two beautiful daughters age 2 and 6 months. Lauren just
began her PhD in Theology in Ottawa, and Michelle just finished her third
year of Fine Arts in British Columbia. My husband has three years to go to
retire, but I am retiring from my teaching job in alternative education this
coming June!
Now that I have found this site, watch out! After June
I will have plenty of time for some road trips, so I may just show up on any
and everyone's doorstep. If any of you are traveling in Canada, I live
along the Ottawa River just about half way between Ottawa and Montreal. It
is an hour drive either way.
I would love to be a tour guide or meet you in the
city for dinner and some catch-up conversation. David McConnell has visited
me twice. Hope to see some other Class of 63 travelers one of these days
too! |

Joe and I have lived in
Lexington KY since 1973, with a hiatus from 1979 to 1983 to work out the
two-career problem (an odyssey that took us to Michigan State University for
18 mo. and then to Birmingham AL for 3 yrs – then back to Lexington). Joe is
a professor of physics and I am a professor of microbiology and immunology.
We visit Chapel Hill several times a year because we both have mothers
and lots of family in the area, and we all still return for full-family
gatherings at Christmas (two Christmas dinners for us). Kentucky is a
beautiful state and a great place to live, although most people have no idea
that this could possibly be true.
However, I have to get my beach fix, and we have had a house at Emerald
Isle for 6 years (after renting several times a year for many years before
that). We are both windsurfers – not high-end body-breaking stuff, just fun
sailing. We can do this occasionally at a lake about an hour’s drive away,
but also when we’re in E.I., and during spring break, at South Padre Island
TX. Over New Year’s break we have gone to windsurf in places like Aruba, Bon
Aire, Margarita (Venezuela), and Grand Cayman, but not recently.
I’ve been thinking about retiring, but I probably should wait until I’m
66, plus I still want to figure out how some plague virulence proteins work
and that will keep me going until then. Joe thinks he doesn’t want to retire
until he’s 80, so I don’t know how it will all work out .
I think this site is great and have enjoyed hearing everyone’s updates!

Full time Insurance agent with N.C. Farm
Bureau Ins. Co. Part time Farmer. Wheat and Corn. Own a couple of combines
and do some custom combining for myself and some neighbors. Hot, dirty,
greasy, noisy, and I love it! Also have 5 antique tractors that 3 of which
find their way to an occasional tractor pull and bring home a few worthless,
but valuable for bragging rights, trophies! .I have two fine children, and
a wonderful wife who is still putting up with me after 37 years. |

Don and I moved to Asheville
last year from Memphis, TN after 30+ years in clinical practice where I was
a pediatric anesthesiologist. Our three daughters are out of the nest;
 | Kea, the oldest, lives in Los Angeles and works in
television production; |
 | Katie, the middle child, married Irby Thompson, a
Vanderbilt classmate, in 2002; they're expecting the first grandchild next
year; |
 | Kirsten, the youngest, lives in Raleigh and is
applying to physicians assistant schools. |
We are very satisfied making the transition to
retirement in a new community in Asheville. It's great to be back in
NC after being away since 1972. |

Bless her heart, Paula
Sturdevant Mercer let me know about the website! Thank you for putting this
together! I wish I had known about it for the 2005 reunion - I would
have broken my proverbial neck to be there! Looking at the pictures and
scanning through our list makes me feel so close to you guys.
I'm still practicing physical physical therapy and
have published an exercise manual ... self-published first, now getting some
interest from "real" publishers.
My children, Hilary 31 and Kenan 27, have
returned to N.C. Hilary is a librarian at NC State and Kenan is
in grad school - ECU for now and applying to some schools "up North" for
Journalism - hey, Jock.
Got divorced in 1993 and now have a wonderful
life-mate. We plan to move to the Appalachians in the next couple of
years to retire, so we're getting closer to home!
Again, THANK YOU for managing this website! I'll put
it in my favorites and keep in touch from now on! |

I'm in Winston-Salem where my husband and
I have been since 1974. He is a periodontist and I am retired from
bookkeeping work. I enjoy volunteer work and staying at our new log
cabin in Wilkes county.
We have 2 children and 4 grandchildren, 2 (my
daughter's girls)) in Winston-Salem and 2 (My son's children) in Montgomery,
AL. I'm going to put a picture up on the site if I can.
We get back to Chapel Hill for UNC ballgames and
meetings. Sally Ivey lives in town and we see a lot of each other.
Thanks for keeping me on the list even though I
graduated from St. Mary's. CHHS is still dear to my heart! |

Not retiring, have no
interest in boredom, still riding and occasionally falling off dirt bikes.
Sold two businesses '06 still have two left. My oldest son Jim is working
with me in the largest. Making progress in duplicating myself there so as to
travel and have more fun.
The last 8 + years I have attended Merlefest in NC.
Have added Floydfest and Shakori Hills. Besides motorcycles, music festivals
are the most fun you can have with your clothes on.
Since that skinny woman I was with at the reunion is
no longer around, yes I miss her but she did leave me with a love of yoga, I
have been making the rounds of the online dating sites, what a hoot. Haven't
settled in with anyone yet, still floating. Who knows, that may be my
future. If so I will enjoy! |

Hi guys! I just found this page and it is
great to hear what people are doing. I am still working for the Virginia
Department of Social Services and can't imagine retiring. I am a Child Care
Human Services Program Consultant. I have two
children and one grand child. My husband died this past May after a long
illness. My daughter is in graduate school here in Richmond and my son and
his family and my grand child are in Mass. My sister just moved to Bangor,
Maine so I am a traveling Grandma and going to New England a lot.
My parents (89 and 90) still live in Chapel Hill so I
get down regularly. I stay in touch with Jane Russell Davis and Mary Young
Land. Also John Gouger and Jock Lauterer. |

I moved to SC late last November
from New York City where we had lived for 10 years since moving from
Houston, TX (five years there), and before that Minneapolis, MN (for 22
years).
I was a French teacher off and on for 11 yrs. in Minneapolis. and a
volunteer docent at the Museum of Am. Dec. Arts in Houston, and then a tour
guide at the Met. Museum in NYC for most of the time there and even after
moving here. Ended last May.
Now am just starting to get involved here and in Charleston with Symphony
and Gibbs Museum and also play golf about 3 or 4 times a week. Since husband
retired last fall, we've been overseas 4 times and will continue to travel
as much as can.
Building a house here since last fall but not finished until late
November so live in our villa. Mother died at age 93 two years ago at
Carolina Meadows so don't get to Chapel Hill as much. In touch with Bo,
Peggy Umstead, Jane, Sally, Winborne, and Eva quite a bit.
Do we have a reunion coming up? Would love to go. Look me up if in
Charleston, anyone. |

What a great time to be
alive, well, and enjoying life with my husband of 40 years (Tony); two sons
(Greg and Jason); two grandsons (Austin and Baymon); and lots of friends.
Retired from the UNC History Department in 2003 after 40 years. Now helping
my son Greg in his antique shop and estate sale business. Also do lots of
grandson sitting.
We have lived for the last 30 years at Jordan Lake about 12 miles from
Chapel Hill on an old tobacco farm. The house was built by a doctor in the
1800s. One of our outbuildings was his office. My grandmother remembered
sitting on our front porch waiting for her appointment. We have a receipt
she saved from l924.
If you ever visit just remember, all the dust is to make things look more
authentic. Best to all, GO CHHSers! |
