TAR HEEL TEAM TEMPO Blast

Fans of UNC Women’s Basketball

December 16. 2009

CALENDAR

Sunday, December 20, 2009, at 3:00 PM

The UNC Women’s Basketball team will face the South Carolina Gamecocks during the annual holiday trip to Myrtle Beach.  South Carolina is a member of the SEC conference, does not currently hold a national ranking, and has already played some tough teams this year.  Matching up with the ACC, USC lost at Clemson in OT 94-92 early in the season, held onto a 74-71 win over NCSU in South Carolina this past weekend, and hosts Wake Forest on Thursday before facing the Tar Heels in Mrytle Beach on Sunday.

The Mrytle Beach location is technically a neutral site, however, the Tar Heels have played there often enough to give it a home feel. On the other hand, USC is bringing a 50-seater “Fan Bus” to the game so cheer loud if you can attend!

Unable to attend?  You can tune into the game on 1360 AM WCHL and affiliated stations. Listen to Brad Heller and Jan Boxill discuss the significance of this game followed by their play-by-play and game commentary.  Click here to find an affiliated station near you.

TEAM TALK

UNC tops Gardner-Webb

Cetera DeGraffenreid and Italee Lucas continue to lead the Tar Heels in Sunday's 81-65 win over Gardner-Webb at the Smith Center.  The freshman struggled with fouls but continue to show effort as Coach Hatchell continues to give them all some extra playing time before ACC play.  Italee and Cetera each had an amazing assist credited as Gardner-Webb attempted to trap them with the ball.  Cetera zigzaged out of three defenders to run down the court and dish out one of her three assists and Italee gave a signature no look pass around two defenders near the basket for one of her 5 assists.

Read more from the UNCAA website in the recap here and an article by contributor Lauren Brownlow here.  There are two articles in the Daily Tar Heel here and here.  The recap was also picked up from Associated Press by the Raleigh News and Observer here and by ESPN here.

From the UNCAA website

UNC WBB and Carolina All Access have released another player interview.  Brad Heller interviews Junior Cetera DeGraffenreid. To view the video, click here to visit the UNCAA website then click the play icon in the Carolina All Access box on the right side of the page.

Many people helped to make this event a success (apologies if anyone is missed).  Thanks to Ronald and Jean Copeland, Jo Yvars, Stella Triplett, Bob Ward, Ann Ward, Mary Bobbitt, Frank Bobbitt, and Chip Hutchins. Also thanks to Jim Stickford and Susan Lauber for taking photos with Santa.

Treasurer’s Blog: From Chip Hutchins

Many, many thanks to all the Tarheel faithful who attended the Holiday Party and left presents for our Carolina Blue Santa's sleigh this past Sunday. Santa's sleigh delivered on 12-15-09 the many toys and presents to both the Durham Rescue Mission and to the Pastor of Cane Creek Baptist Church, Hillsborough, NC. I know Mr. and Mrs. Santa (Ronald and Jean Copeland) are smiling and are most pleased. Ms. Leola Cole and Ms. Rhonda Surles of the Mission (and Tarheel fans) and Pastor Jack Edge were so appreciative and thankful with everyone's generosity. They all said this year was so very, very lean for many families and to please share their thanks to each of you for caring! The gifts will be welcomed with smiles by a number of children and families this coming Christmas morning.

So again, thanks to all of you! It is GREAT to be a Tar Heel and even better to be associated with Tar Heels like all of you!

Steering Committee Shuffle

Astrid Gatling has accepted the position of Secretary for the Steering Committee. Congratulations and good luck!

Also huge THANK YOU to Gail Jacobs for covering that position for the past sixty days as Interim Secretary.

From the Outreach Committee:

The Marketing and Promotions Office of UNCAD has asked Tar Heel Team Tempo to help identify and encourage groups that would be interested in group, discount purchases of individual game tickets. We have starter lists of Middle/Elementary schools and of Retirement Communities to visit.

There are at least two ways you might help this project: 1) Identify groups with which you are familiar that you think would be interested in attending games and 2) Volunteer your time to deliver materials promoting group sales to interested groups.  Send us an email with your suggestions and level of interest in helping, click here.
