TAR HEEL TEAM TEMPO Blast

Fans of UNC Women’s Basketball

January 20, 2010

“Champions are like biscuits:  when things heat up, they rise.”

The quotation in the subject line above was Coach Hatchell’s message to our team at halftime during the Maryland game which she revealed during last week’s radio show.

CALENDAR

Friday, January 22, 2010, at 8:30 PM

Stay out late on Friday night to see UNC host Clemson in Carmichael. Several local Shag Dance Groups will perform at halftime. Rumors abound about beach music and shag dancing after the game too!  Post game dancing may even feature Coach Hatchell - “Oh, Yeah! If all goes well” she says.

How about dinner before the game?  The Tar Heel Team Tempo Events committee invites all fans to meet at 6:30pm at Time Out Sports Bar and Restaurant in the Holiday Inn for dinner before the game. Plan for your pre-game meals at Time Out for the rest of the season. Dutch treat as always.

Need to watch or listen from home? The game will be televised on Regional Sports Network and Brad Heller and Jan Boxill provide radio coverage on the Tar Heel Sports Network.  Radio coverage is on WCHL-AM 1360 in Chapel Hill. Click here for other radio affiliates. The audio is also being carried FREE by Carolina All Access. Click here to see the Tar Heels Schedule then look for the “listen” button in the “Next Event” box on the right hand side.

What do you know about the new coach at NC State?  ESPN columnist Mechelle Vopel wrote about the new coach in December. Click here to read “Harper quickly finds a home at NC State”.

TEAM TALK

Tar Heels fall to Virginia Tech in first ACC road game, 79-64

The Tar Heels first ACC road game of the year did not end well.  Following the loss at UCONN, UNC continued to struggle shooting the ball in Blacksburg despite 13 points from Chay Shegog.  Read the UNCAA recap here and the Daily Tar Heel writeup here. The story was also covered by the News and Observer here and by ESPN here.

Tar Heels return home to handle the Terrapins, 75-64

Chay Shegog is the leading UNC scorer for the 2nd game in a row but Italee Lucas also scored double figures to lead the Tar Heels in a win over Maryland!!   Stronger defense, less turnovers, more passes inside, and, of course, the home court crowd helped propel the win.  Read the UNCAA recap here, Lauren Brownlow's “Making Leaders” insight here, and two articles in the Daily Tar Heel here and here.  The game is also covered by the News and Observer here and by ESPN here.

New Traditions

The coaching staff requests new game routines to energize both the team and the fans at home games.

·         You may have already noticed the team all standing with right hand across the heart during the National Anthem. This is in accordance with the US Flag Code for a proper salute when not in military uniform.  Please join the team in this salute.  Click here to learn more about the US Flag code or here to read report for Congress.

·         Please stand, clap, and cheer for the UNC player introductions and continue through the first basket scored by our team.

·         Please stand, clap, and cheer at the beginning of the second half until the first basket is scored  by our team.

·         At the end of the game after they sing the UNC Alma Mater, the players will run a victory lap thanking the fans for their support. Kids (young and not so young) are welcome to approach the rail to slap hands as they run past.

Around the ACC

The race for ACC champion is still wide open with a number of underdogs winning or doing very well this past week. Boston College had a win over Georgia Tech, Wake Forest topped Miami, and Florida State barely held off NC State. Keep track of the ACC WBB standings here.

Top 25 Polls

UNC drops to #14 in the AP poll and #15 in the ESPN/USA Today poll after our loss at VT. Other ACC teams in the top 25 include Duke (#6/7), Florida State (#15/16), Georgia Tech (#22/NR), and Virginia (#25/22).  Maryland and Miami (Fl) are also receiving votes.  See the full listing here.

?? for the Coaches

Ever had a question on how the game is played or why our team reacts to a certain game event? Click here to send us your question to be answered during Coach Hatchell's weekly radio show. The first few weeks have been so full of good information that there has not been time for questions.  Coach Hatchell did stay after the show this week and answer several questions from the audience.

As this fan remembers it:

Q: How much of an impact does game performance have on academics?

Coach: That is a question for Jan Boxill, our spectacular academic adviser.

Jan: A lot.  Academic performance affects game performance and game performance affects academics.  We had a study hall the day after the MD win that went very well.

Q: What is the rule about coaches on the court during play?

Coach: They shouldn't be there.  The referees need to run up the sideline and should not run into a coach.  The referees always warn the coach to stay in the coach’s box and off the court.
