From the Communications Chair
“A
New Year, A New Season” for your Communications Committee!
The
past 18 months were filled with excitement as we sculptured the
framework for our organization to support UNC Women’s Basketball. Your
Communications Committee will use creative energy in the next 12 months
to educate, motivate, and stimulate the UNC Women’s Basketball audience.
Tar
Heel Team Tempo’s theme for the 2010-2011 Season is
“Be the 6th Player!”
According to Wikipedia:
“The
Sixth Man section is a group of fans of a basketball team,
usually collegiate or prep, that attempt to influence the game by
cheering and chanting for their team of choice. The fan section is
referred to as the "sixth man," because they are the sixth "player" on
the basketball team that influences the game. Many share the same
characteristics, such as similar chants and similar behaviors.
Sixth
Man clubs originated in college basketball, where deep crowds of
students assemble to chant for their team. Quality Sixth Man Squads
attend home and away games to support their team. Many create identical
shirts to appear unified and even more numerous. Sixth Man clubs name
themselves based on their school mascot or color.”
We
renamed “The 6th Man” to “The 6th Player” as Tar
Heel Team Tempo challenges UNC students to match our energy, enthusiasm,
and emotion. Although we do not intend to mimic Duke’s Cameron Crazies,
neither are we the “Wine and Cheese” crowd. We are Coach Sylvia
Hatchell’s core supporters willing to chant, sing, cheer, clap,
host, whatever … all our efforts delivered in a classy style that
reflects her demeanor on the court and off.
Your
Communications Committee will deliver this message by:
1.
Emailing The Blast to all known fans weekly during the season and
monthly off-season with a core of strategic information about Coach
Hatchell’s program found nowhere else
2.
Creating a new web site with enhanced features for our members
3.
Photographing games and social events as we catalog our inventory of
photographs
4.
Designing social media messages to access the “lost” 21-40 year old fan
base
5.
Issuing press releases through local media to invite others to both the
home games and our events
6.
Conducting a survey at the end of the season to provide Coach Hatchell’s
fans with a direct voice to her office
Many
fun, challenging projects await our attention. Here are two immediate
needs:
1.
In
the next four weeks, the Communications Committee will assist in the
design of Tar Heel Team Tempo’s business cards and a tri-fold flyer.
This requires a marketing copywriter and a graphic artist. If you have
either skill and can volunteer three hours of your time, click
here.
2.
Our
Facebook and Twitter pages are active but not manned consistently. If
you would enjoy transmitting information from THTT through either if
these media streams, click
here.
Thank
you for your willingness to help us!
