Transportation: |

| Taxis are plentiful and reasonable. One way twenty minute trip
to top of central caldeira was 5 Euro. |
| Rental cars are available but we had a bad experience after we
returned the vehicle. About two hours later, the operator chased us
down at the port and demanded another 50 euro to cover what he claimed was
damage to his car. We had paid an additional 9 euro for extra
insurance except for the 50 euro deductible. Upon inspection, we told him that we
had not hit anything and did not agree that the slight smudge in paint was
our problem, especially since we had not seen any damage before we
returned the car and did not know who had driven it since we returned it.
Suggest negotiating a day trip with a taxi operator instead. |

Recommendations: |
|
| Caldeira: highest point on island in a nature reserve;
rent a bike at Base Peter Zee and they will drive you to the upper island
crater so that you can ride down! A very fast and exhilarating ride! |
| Ponta Dos Capelinhos: if you are a geologist or a hiker, do not
miss this western-most point of the island where a volcano erupted
offshore in 1957 and added a few square miles to Faial. Dune,
the movie, should be filmed here! |
